How to Turn Any Place into a Happy Place

As children, when the going gets rough we were told to “find our happy place.” As adults, we can continue to use this same way of thinking to inspire positive thoughts and good vibes, whether we’re in our homes or out in the world.

At Verilux, we want you to find your happy place (our light therapy lamps are called HappyLight® for a reason!). That’s how we came up with our Happy Place Giveaway. Throughout January 2018, enter to win $300 in prizes, including a HappyLight Touch LED 10,000 Lux Light Therapy Lamp.

For even more joy boosts to add to your spaces and daily routines, here are 7 bright ideas.

1. Incorporate Bright Colors into Your Space

Bright colors act as natural mood lifters. From your office or cubicle to your living spaces, weave in pops through vibrant office supplies, artwork, furniture, and more. If you prefer neutrals, even soft greens or cheerful pinks can be just the ticket.

2. Surround Yourself with Light

Each and every day, even when gray clouds cover the skies, make light the theme of your routine. Open up your blinds, drink your coffee next to a window, get out for a morning walk, and turn on all available lights.

Get an extra dose of happy with a HappyLight, proven to lift moods, increase energy, and get you through those winter doldrums.

3. Practice Visualization

Visualization is something that athletes rely on to perform at their best, and it’s a method that therapists recommend as well. If you’re somewhere that’s less-than-happy, or if you just can’t shake those negative vibes wherever you are, tuck into a corner or shut the bathroom door, close your eyes, and imagine your happy place. Go into detail. What does it look like? Smell like? Feel like? Go to that place when you’re having an especially challenging day.

4. Bring in Flowers and Plants

Plants and flowers have been scientifically proven to make us happier people. Maybe it’s the fact that they provide much-needed color to rooms, or it’s the satisfaction we feel as we care for another living thing. Either way, to set the scene of your happy place, be sure to include some houseplants or buy a fresh bouquet of flowers every week.

5. Hang Up Inspiring Quotes

If you’re a person who responds well to a mantra or affirmation, run with it. Showcase a phrase that’s personal to you and put it in several locations in your home—a bulletin board, a wall, or your bathroom mirror—or write down your phrase and put it in your wallet for a continuous, daily reminder.

6. Set Out Your Self-Care Essentials

Nothing prompts a dedication to self-care better than putting out your essentials in plain sight. First, do some soul-searching and think about what self-care means to you. Is it beloved beauty products? A stack of books? Your running shoes? Dedicate a small area to these self-care must-haves and display them prominently. It’ll make your space and your days feel even better.

7. Create a Feel-Good Playlist

We all face those low-mood moments. When the blues inevitably hit, you can be ready with a playlist made for encouraging feelings of bliss, perfect for listening at your desk or during a walk with your earbuds in. What are the songs that lift you out of a funk no matter what?

With these tips on your side, you really can turn any place into a happy place!
